Chicken Siyomai: A Flavorful Asian Delight

This delightful recipe for Chicken Siyomai brings the rich flavors of traditional Asian cuisine right to your kitchen. With its tender chicken filling, crunchy vegetables, and delicate dumpling wrappers, this dish is perfect for a family dinner or a special occasion. Follow these simple steps to create your own batch of homemade Siyomai that will surely impress your guests.

Ingredients:

  • 300 grams ground chicken (skinless)
  • 100 grams sago flour (can be adjusted as needed)
  • 1/2 cup grated chayote (also known as labu siam)
  • 1/2 cup shredded carrot
  • Wonton wrappers (for wrapping)
  • For the seasoning:
    • 3 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1 teaspoon soy sauce (Raja Rasa or any preferred brand)
    • A pinch of ground black pepper
    • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
    • 2 stalks green onions, finely chopped

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Filling:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground chicken with the minced garlic, salt, soy sauce, black pepper, sesame oil, and chopped green onions. Mix thoroughly to ensure the seasonings are evenly distributed.

  2. Incorporate the Vegetables:
Add the grated chayote and shredded carrot to the chicken mixture. Stir well to combine. Gradually add the sago flour, mixing it into the filling until it reaches a slightly sticky consistency. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.

  3. Assemble the Siyomai:
Prepare the wonton wrappers by placing them on a clean surface. Spoon a small amount of the filling mixture onto the center of each wrapper. Carefully fold the sides of the wrapper up around the filling, pinching the top to seal it but leaving the top open. Optionally, you can sprinkle a small amount of shredded carrot on top for added color and texture.

  4. Steam the Siyomai:
Bring a pot of water to a boil and set up your steamer basket or rack. Place the filled siyomai into the steamer, making sure they are not overcrowded to allow for even cooking. Steam over high heat for 20-25 minutes, or until the filling is fully cooked and the wrappers are tender.

  5. Serve:
Once the siyomai are steamed, remove them from the steamer and let them cool slightly. Serve them warm with soy sauce or peanut sauce for dipping.

Enjoy your homemade Chicken Siyomai as a delectable appetizer or a main course. This recipe captures the essence of traditional Asian dumplings with a modern twist, making it a versatile and flavorful addition to your culinary repertoire.
