Ingredients:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 pinches of salt
  • 1 cup 1% low-fat chocolate milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon margarine

For the cherry sauce:

  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup cherries, pitted and halved

Instructions:

Step Description
1 In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, and salt. Create a well in the center of the mixture.
2 In a separate bowl, whisk together the chocolate milk, egg, and melted margarine. Pour this mixture into the well of the dry ingredients. Gently stir until just combined, being careful not to overmix; a few lumps are okay.
3 Preheat a griddle or skillet over medium heat and lightly coat it with cooking spray. Pour about 2 tablespoons of batter onto the hot surface for each pancake. Cook until bubbles form on the surface and the edges look set, then flip and cook until golden brown on the other side.
4 While the pancakes are cooking, prepare the cherry sauce. In a saucepan, combine the sugar and cornstarch, then gradually stir in the water until smooth. Add the lemon juice and cherries, stirring well. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sauce has thickened and become bubbly, about 5 minutes.
5 Serve the pancakes warm, topped with the homemade cherry sauce. Optionally, you can dust them with powdered sugar or add a dollop of whipped cream for extra indulgence. Enjoy the delightful blend of flavors in every bite!

Cook’s Tips:

  • For extra chocolate flavor, you can sprinkle some chocolate chips onto the pancakes just after pouring the batter onto the griddle.
  • If fresh cherries are not in season, you can use frozen cherries for the sauce. Simply thaw them before using and adjust the cooking time as needed.
  • These pancakes freeze well! Allow them to cool completely, then stack them with parchment paper in between each pancake and place them in a freezer-safe bag. To reheat, simply pop them in the toaster or microwave until warmed through.

Recipe Notes:
The combination of chocolate and cherries in these pancakes creates a delightful twist on the classic Black Forest cake. Whether you’re enjoying them for breakfast, brunch, or even dessert, these indulgent pancakes are guaranteed to satisfy your cravings and impress your guests. Serve them up for a special occasion or simply as a treat for yourself—you won’t be disappointed!
