Step Description
1. In a 5-quart saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the diced chicken breasts and cook until they are no longer pink.
2. Pour in the chicken broth and bring it to a boil.
3. Add the uncooked penne pasta and ground black pepper to the saucepan, stirring to coat the pasta with the liquid.
4. Bring the mixture to a boil again, then reduce the heat. Cover the saucepan and let it simmer for about 7 minutes, stirring every 2 minutes to prevent sticking.
5. After 7 minutes, add the chopped asparagus to the saucepan. Continue cooking for another 7 minutes, or until the pasta is tender and most of the liquid has been absorbed.
6. Meanwhile, in a separate medium-sized bowl, combine the milk and 1/2 cup of grated Parmesan cheese, stirring until smooth.
7. Once the pasta is cooked and the liquid has reduced, stir in the milk and Parmesan mixture into the chicken and pasta.
8. Heat the mixture until it just comes to a boil.
9. Sprinkle the remaining grated Parmesan cheese over the top of the dish before serving.
