Description

Asian Style Paper Wrapped Chicken is a traditional Chinese appetizer that brings the perfect balance of spice and tenderness. This dish features boneless chicken marinated in a savory mix of soy sauce, garlic, ginger, and Chinese five-spice powder, then wrapped in wax paper for a flavorful, juicy bite. Deep-fried to golden perfection, these paper-wrapped parcels are bursting with rich, aromatic flavors that will transport you straight to the streets of China.

Ingredients

Ingredient Quantity
Boneless chicken, minced 1/2 kg
Onion 1, finely chopped
Parsley leaves, chopped 2 tablespoons
Dry Red Chilli, chopped 2 (adjust for spice level)
Soy sauce 1/2 tablespoon
Salt As needed
White pepper powder 1 teaspoon
Red Chilli sauce 1/2 tablespoon
Chinese 5 Spice Powder 2 teaspoons
Spring Onion (Bulb & Greens) 4, chopped
Ginger, chopped 2 teaspoons
Garlic, chopped 2 teaspoons
Oil (for frying) As needed

Preparation Time

120 minutes (includes marination)

Cooking Time

15 minutes

Instructions

  1. Marinate the Chicken
In a large mixing bowl, combine the minced chicken with the soy sauce, salt, white pepper powder, red chilli sauce, Chinese five-spice powder, spring onions (bulb and greens), ginger, and garlic. Stir the mixture thoroughly to ensure the chicken is well-coated with the marinade. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for 1-2 hours to let the flavors meld together.

  2. Prepare the Paper Parcels
While the chicken is marinating, cut sheets of wax paper or baking paper into squares, approximately 6-8 inches in size. You will use these squares to wrap the chicken.

  3. Assemble the Parcels
After the marination time has passed, take a spoonful of the marinated chicken mixture and place it in the center of each paper square. Fold the paper around the chicken, twisting the ends to seal the parcel like a candy wrapper. Make sure the chicken is securely enclosed in the paper.

  4. Fry the Paper-Wrapped Chicken
Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot enough (test with a small piece of chicken – it should sizzle immediately), carefully lower the paper-wrapped parcels into the oil. Fry for about 7-10 minutes, or until the chicken is fully cooked through and the paper turns a golden, crisp brown. You may need to flip the parcels halfway through frying to ensure even cooking.

  5. Serve
Once fried to perfection, remove the paper-wrapped chicken parcels from the oil and place them on a paper towel to drain any excess oil. Serve hot as a delightful appetizer or pair it with Sichuan Sauce, Chinese Egg Drop Soup, or Chinese Style Green Beans for a more complete meal.
