Savory Beef Steak with Rich Gravy

Ingredients:

  • 750 g beef steak, thinly sliced (approximately 1 cm thick), then tenderized
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp sweet soy sauce (kecap manis)
  • 1 large garlic clove, minced
  • 1 egg
  • 7.5 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 tbsp cornstarch
  • Beef bouillon powder, to taste
  • For the Gravy:
    • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
    • 1 medium onion, sliced lengthwise
    • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
    • 500 ml water
    • 4 tsp teriyaki sauce
    • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
    • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
    • 1 tbsp soy sauce
    • 1 tbsp sweet soy sauce (kecap manis)
    • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
    • Salt, to taste
    • Olive oil, for cooking
  • For Serving:
    • French fries
    • Lettuce
    • Boiled carrots
    • Scrambled eggs

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Beef:

    • Begin by tenderizing the beef slices using a meat mallet or the back of a knife, ensuring they are well-broken down to make them more tender.
    • Season the beef with ground black pepper, salt, minced garlic, oyster sauce, soy sauce, and sweet soy sauce. Mix thoroughly to ensure all pieces are well-coated with the seasoning. Let the beef marinate for 30 minutes to absorb the flavors.
  2. Coat the Beef:

    • After marinating, add the egg to the beef mixture and stir until evenly distributed.
    • Prepare a coating mixture by combining all-purpose flour, cornstarch, and beef bouillon powder. Dredge each piece of beef in this mixture, pressing lightly to make sure the flour adheres well.
  3. Fry the Beef:

    • Heat olive oil in a frying pan over medium-low heat. Fry the coated beef slices in the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Cook until the exterior is crispy and golden brown, and the interior is fully cooked. Adjust the heat as needed to prevent burning. Remove from the pan and drain on paper towels.
  4. Make the Gravy:

    • In a separate pan, heat olive oil and sauté the chopped garlic and sliced onion until softened and fragrant.
    • Add the flour to the pan and stir continuously until the flour begins to turn a light golden color.
    • Gradually add water to the flour mixture, stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming.
    • Incorporate ground black pepper, teriyaki sauce, oyster sauce, soy sauce, sweet soy sauce, and ground nutmeg. Continue to cook and stir until the gravy is thickened and starts to bubble. Season with salt to taste.
  5. Serve:

    • Arrange the fried beef slices on a serving plate and generously pour the rich gravy over them.
    • Garnish with French fries, fresh lettuce, boiled carrots, and scrambled eggs on the side.

This savory beef steak, paired with a rich and flavorful gravy, makes for a hearty and satisfying meal that’s perfect for a comforting dinner. Enjoy!
