Instructions:

  1. Wash and Pat Dry: Begin by thoroughly washing the chicken pieces and patting them dry.

  2. Buttermilk Bath: Place the chicken in a long, shallow glass baking dish. Pour the buttermilk over the chicken, ensuring each piece is well-coated. Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, turning the chicken once or twice during this marinating process.

  3. Seasoned Flour Mix: In a clean plastic or brown paper bag, combine the all-purpose flour, salt, black pepper, paprika, and, if desired, the garlic and onion powders.

  4. Coat Chicken: Drain the marinated chicken and place two or three pieces at a time into the seasoned flour mixture bag. Shake the bag well to coat each piece evenly. Repeat until all chicken pieces are coated.

  5. Heat Oil: In a large, heavy skillet, heat about half of the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it’s hot but not smoking.

  6. Brown Chicken: Add the coated chicken pieces to the hot oil, working in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding. Brown the chicken on all sides, approximately three minutes per side. Place the browned chicken on a warm platter and repeat until all pieces are cooked.

  7. Cook Covered: When all the chicken pieces are browned, crowd them into the skillet, turn the heat to medium-low, cover, and cook. Turn the pieces occasionally, allowing them to cook until tender, approximately 35-40 minutes.

  8. Crisp Skin: Remove the cover, turn the heat to medium-high, and cook for an additional six to eight minutes or until the skin becomes crispy.

  9. Serve: Serve the Buttermilk Southern Fried Chicken at once. This delightful dish serves 4 and is perfect for a hearty, flavorful meal.

🌟 Enjoy the crispy perfection and Southern charm of this Buttermilk Southern Fried Chicken recipe! 🌟
