Spicy Fried Catfish with Rujak Seasoning

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 kg small catfish
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2 shallots
  • 10 red chilies
  • 2 candlenuts
  • 2 kaffir lime leaves
  • 1 teaspoon sweet soy sauce
  • To taste: sugar, salt
  • To taste: beef broth powder

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Catfish:

    • Heat oil in a pan and fry the catfish until crispy and cooked through. Set aside on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  2. Make the Spice Paste:

    • In a blender or food processor, combine the garlic, shallots, red chilies, and candlenuts. Blend until smooth.
  3. Cook the Spice Paste:

    • Heat a bit of oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the blended spice paste and sauté until fragrant and the oil starts to separate from the paste. Add the kaffir lime leaves while sautéing.
  4. Season the Paste:

    • Stir in the sweet soy sauce, sugar, salt, and beef broth powder. Adjust the seasoning to your taste.
  5. Combine with Catfish:

    • Gently add the fried catfish into the pan with the spice paste. Toss to coat the catfish thoroughly with the seasoning. Cook for a few more minutes until the sauce has thickened and adhered to the catfish.
  6. Serve:

    • Transfer the spicy fried catfish to a serving plate. Enjoy it warm as a flavorful and aromatic dish!

This Indonesian-style catfish, spiced with a fragrant rujak seasoning, is perfect for those who enjoy a blend of savory and spicy flavors. The crispy texture of the catfish paired with the rich, aromatic spice paste makes it a delightful and satisfying meal.
