Beef Bitterballen Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 250 grams ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1/2 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon beef bouillon powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 250 ml full cream milk
  • 100 grams grated cheddar cheese
  • 100 grams all-purpose flour

For the Filling:

  • Mozzarella cheese, cut into small cubes (optional)

For Frying:

  • 3 eggs, beaten
  • Bread crumbs, as needed
  • Cooking oil, as needed

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Meat Mixture: In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and garlic, sautéing until they become aromatic and translucent. Add the ground beef to the skillet, seasoning with beef bouillon powder, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Cook until the beef is well-browned and cooked through.

  2. Combine Ingredients: Reduce the heat to low. Pour in the full cream milk and add the grated cheddar cheese. Stir continuously until the mixture comes to a gentle boil and the cheese is fully melted. Gradually add the flour, stirring constantly until the mixture becomes smooth and thick. Allow the mixture to cool completely.

  3. Shape the Balls: Once the mixture is cool, take small portions and shape them into balls. Flatten each ball slightly, place a small cube of mozzarella cheese (if using) in the center, and then reshape the ball to enclose the cheese.

  4. Coat the Balls: Dip each ball into the beaten eggs, ensuring it is fully coated. Roll the ball in bread crumbs to coat it evenly. For an extra crispy coating, dip the ball back into the egg and roll in the bread crumbs again.

  5. Fry the Bitterballen: Heat the cooking oil in a deep fryer or large skillet over medium heat. Fry the bitterballen in batches, turning occasionally, until they are golden brown and crispy. Remove from the oil and drain on paper towels.
