Ayam Popcorn with Honey Date Sauce Recipe

Ingredients:

  • For the Chicken Marinade:

    • 1/2 pound boneless chicken breast fillet
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
    • Salt, to taste
  • For the Flour Coating:

    • All-purpose flour, as needed
    • Salt, to taste
    • Water, as needed
  • For the Sauce:

    • 2 tablespoons date syrup (or honey, if unavailable)
    • 2 tablespoons tomato sauce
    • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
    • 2 tablespoons sweet soy sauce (kecap manis)
    • 1 cm fresh ginger, minced
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 small onion, finely chopped
    • Salt, to taste
    • Chopped green onions, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Chicken:

    • Cut the chicken breast into bite-sized cubes. In a mixing bowl, combine the chicken with minced garlic, ground black pepper, and salt. Allow it to marinate for at least 1 hour to absorb the flavors.
  2. Prepare the Flour Coating:

    • While the chicken is marinating, prepare the flour coating. In one bowl, mix all-purpose flour with a pinch of salt and enough water to create a batter. In a separate bowl, place some additional all-purpose flour for dredging.
  3. Coat and Fry the Chicken:

    • After the chicken has finished marinating, coat each piece first in the batter, then dredge in the dry flour. Ensure each piece is evenly coated. Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Fry the chicken pieces until golden brown and crispy, then drain on paper towels.
  4. Prepare the Sauce:

    • In a separate pan, heat a small amount of oil over medium heat. Sauté minced garlic, chopped onion, and minced ginger until fragrant and translucent.
    • Add the date syrup (or honey), tomato sauce, oyster sauce, and sweet soy sauce. Stir well to combine all the ingredients and let the sauce simmer for a few minutes. Adjust the seasoning with salt to taste.
  5. Combine and Serve:

    • Add the fried chicken pieces to the sauce and gently toss until the chicken is evenly coated with the sauce.
    • Garnish with chopped green onions before serving.

Enjoy this delectable Ayam Popcorn with its sweet and savory honey date sauce, perfect for a delightful meal!
