Cuisine: North Indian
Course: Appetizer
Diet: Vegetarian

Ingredients

For the covering (Shallow Frying):

Ingredient Quantity
Oil As required for shallow frying
Potatoes (Aloo) 5, boiled
Arrowroot flour 5 tablespoons

For the stuffing:

Ingredient Quantity
Fresh coconut, grated 1 cup
Roasted Peanuts (Moongphali), grounded 1 cup
Lemon 1
Green Chillies 2
Ginger 1 inch piece
Sugar 1 tablespoon
Red Chilli powder 1 teaspoon
Salt To taste

Preparation Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 30 minutes

Total Time: 40 minutes

Serves: 15 patties

Instructions

  1. Boil the Potatoes
Begin by pressure cooking the potatoes for about 4 whistles. Once the potatoes are cooked, allow them to cool down, peel off the skins, and mash them properly.

  2. Prepare the Potato Mixture
To the mashed potatoes, add 2 tablespoons of arrowroot flour and salt to taste. Mix thoroughly to combine. Shape the mixture into 15 medium-sized balls and set them aside.

  3. Make the Stuffing
In a mixing bowl, add the grated coconut and grounded roasted peanuts. Blend them together until they are well combined. Next, grind the green chillies, ginger, and lemon juice into a fine paste using a grinder. Add this paste to the coconut and peanut mixture.

  4. Season the Stuffing
Add sugar, salt, and red chilli powder to the mixture, and stir well. Your stuffing is now ready!

  5. Shape the Pattice
Take each potato ball and gently flatten it using the palm of your hand. Place a spoonful of the coconut-peanut mixture onto the center of the flattened ball. Carefully fold the edges of the ball over the stuffing, ensuring there are no cracks, and shape it into a patty or oval shape. If the mixture sticks to your hands, rub some arrowroot flour on your palms for easy handling.

  6. Prepare for Frying
Repeat the same process for the remaining potato balls. Once all the patties are shaped, lightly coat them with arrowroot flour on all sides.

  7. Fry the Pattice
Heat oil in a deep frying pan. Once the oil is hot, gently place the patties in the oil. Fry them until they turn golden brown and crispy on all sides. Once cooked, place them on an absorbent paper towel to remove any excess oil.

  8. Serve and Enjoy
Farali Aaloo Pattice can be served with refreshing dhaniya pudina chutney for an added burst of flavor. It pairs wonderfully with dishes like Sabudana Khichdi, Doodhi Halwa, or a chilled cucumber raita for a wholesome and satisfying meal.

Serving Tip:
These crispy and flavorful patties are a great addition to any fasting menu and make for a perfect appetizer or snack. Enjoy the taste of North India with every bite of these delicious Farali Aaloo Pattice!
