Preparation Time:

  • Prep Time: 20 minutes
  • Cook Time: 40 minutes

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Filling

  • In a mixing bowl, combine all the ingredients for the filling: roasted peanuts, freshly grated coconut, sugar, sultana raisins, lemon juice, chopped cashew nuts, green chilies, grated ginger, garam masala powder, and finely chopped coriander leaves.
  • Mix all the ingredients well until they form a consistent, nutty dough. Set the mixture aside for later use.

Step 2: Prepare the Potato Dough

  • In another bowl, combine the boiled, peeled, and mashed potatoes with arrowroot flour and salted butter.
  • Knead the mixture into a smooth and firm dough. This will form the outer cover for the pattice.

Step 3: Shape the Pattice

  • Divide both the potato dough and the filling mixture into 8 equal portions.
  • Grease your palms with a little oil. Take a portion of the potato dough, flatten it out on your palm, and place one portion of the filling mixture in the center.
  • Carefully fold the edges of the potato dough around the filling and seal it tightly, forming a ball.
  • Gently roll the filled potato ball between your palms to shape it into a smooth round pattice. Repeat the process with the remaining dough and filling.

Step 4: Coat and Prepare for Baking

  • Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
  • Roll each pattice in the whole wheat bread crumbs (or sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or rajgira lahyas) until fully coated on all sides.
  • Place the coated pattice on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, ensuring they are not crowded.

Step 5: Bake the Pattice

  • Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes, or until the pattice turn golden brown and crispy on all sides.
  • Check once or twice to ensure an even bake. Once done, remove the pattice from the oven.

Step 6: Serve

  • Transfer the freshly baked Farali Pattice to a serving platter. Serve hot, accompanied by green chutney and a warm cup of Adrak Chai (Ginger Tea).
  • These pattice make for an ideal fasting food and a delightful snack for any occasion.

Tips for Perfect Farali Pattice

  • Adjust the spice levels: You can modify the heat in the filling by adding more or fewer green chilies according to your preference.
  • Coating options: Instead of whole wheat bread crumbs, you can use sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or even rajgira flour (amaranth flour) for a different texture and flavor.
  • Make ahead: You can prepare the pattice in advance, freeze them, and bake them directly from the freezer when you’re ready to serve.
