Gluten-Free Samosa Recipe: A Delightful Indian Snack

Samosas are a beloved snack across India and beyond, renowned for their crispy, golden exterior and flavorful spiced fillings. Traditionally made with wheat flour, this Gluten-Free Samosa recipe offers the same delicious taste and texture, but with the added benefit of being suitable for those with gluten sensitivities. Using rice paper to encase the savory potato and pea filling, these samosas are baked rather than fried, making them a healthier alternative without sacrificing flavor. Enjoy them as a snack or appetizer, served with a refreshing chutney or a steaming cup of masala chai.

Instructions for Making Gluten-Free Samosa

  1. Prepare the Potatoes
Start by peeling, dicing, and boiling the potatoes until they are soft. Once done, mash the potatoes and set them aside in a large bowl.

  2. Cook the Aromatics and Spices
In a pan, heat the butter over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and allow them to splutter. Then, add the chopped onions and sauté them until they become soft and translucent. This should take about 3-4 minutes.

  3. Mix the Filling
Once the onions are cooked, add the garam masala powder and salt to the pan. Stir everything together to infuse the flavors. Transfer this mixture to the mashed potatoes and mix thoroughly. Add the boiled peas to the potato mixture and blend until evenly combined. Set the filling aside to cool.

  4. Prepare the Rice Paper Wrappers
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Fill a large bowl with water, about 1/4 full. Submerge each rice paper sheet in the water one at a time, allowing them to soak for 1-2 minutes until they become soft and pliable.

  5. Assemble the Samosas
Lay a softened rice paper sheet flat on a clean surface. Place about 1-2 tablespoons of the potato-pea filling in the center of the sheet. Begin by folding the bottom of the rice paper up over the filling, then fold in the sides. Finally, fold the top down, sealing the samosa into a triangular shape. Repeat this process for all the samosas.

  6. Bake the Samosas
Place the prepared samosas on a well-oiled baking tray. Lightly brush each samosa with a bit more oil to ensure they crisp up nicely during baking. Bake the samosas in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, turning them halfway through for even crisping. They should be golden and crunchy when done.

  7. Serve
Once baked, remove the samosas from the oven and let them cool slightly. Serve hot with a side of Dhaniya Pudina Chutney (Coriander Mint Chutney) and a cup of Masala Chai for the ultimate tea-time treat.

Tips for Perfect Gluten-Free Samosas

  • Rice Paper Tip: If you’re new to working with rice paper, it’s essential not to soak it too long. Over-soaking can make the rice paper too fragile to work with, while under-soaking may make it difficult to fold.

  • Customize the Filling: Feel free to get creative with the filling! You can add ingredients like chopped spinach, shredded carrots, or even a sprinkle of fresh cilantro to enhance the flavor.

  • Make Ahead: These gluten-free samosas can be assembled in advance and stored in the refrigerator. Just bake them before serving to ensure they are crispy.

  • Serve with a Drink: These samosas pair beautifully with a hot cup of Masala Chai, but they are also delicious with a cool glass of sweetened lassi or even a chilled bottle of mango juice.

Enjoy these delicious gluten-free samosas at your next party, family gathering, or simply as a savory snack with your evening tea. With their crispy rice paper wrapper and spiced potato filling, these samosas are sure to be a hit!
