Sweet and Sour Gurame Fish Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 whole gurame fish (500 grams), filleted
  • 1 lime
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • Salt to taste
  • 3 tablespoons chili sauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomato ketchup
  • 1/2 sachet chicken bouillon powder
  • Water, as needed
  • 1 egg
  • For the batter:
    • 10 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
    • Alternatively, use pre-mixed batter flour (like Sajiku or Kobe)
  • For the sauce:
    • 1 onion
    • 2 cloves garlic
    • 2 red chilies or bell peppers
    • 2 stalks green onions

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Fish:

    • Clean the gurame fish thoroughly and pat dry with paper towels.
    • Rub the fish with salt and lime juice, then let it sit for about 10 minutes. Rinse the fish again and pat dry.
    • Sprinkle the chicken bouillon powder over the fish and mix well. Let it marinate for approximately 15 minutes.
  2. Batter the Fish:

    • Beat the egg in a shallow dish.
    • Dip the marinated fish into the beaten egg, ensuring it is well-coated.
    • Dredge the fish in a mixture of all-purpose flour and cornstarch, pressing lightly to help the coating adhere. This will give the fish a crispy texture when fried.
  3. Fry the Fish:

    • Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.
    • Fry the coated fish until it turns golden brown and crispy, about 5-7 minutes per side. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  4. Prepare the Sauce:

    • For the sauce, heat a small amount of oil in a pan.
    • Sauté the chopped onion and garlic until fragrant.
    • Add the sliced red chilies and green onions, and stir briefly.
    • Pour in a small amount of water to create a sauce base.
    • Stir in the chili sauce, tomato ketchup, granulated sugar, and salt to taste.
    • Cook until the sauce thickens and bubbles, adjusting the seasoning as needed.
  5. Serve:

    • Place the fried fish on a serving plate.
    • Spoon the prepared sauce over the fish or serve it on the side.
    • Garnish with additional green onions if desired.

Enjoy this delightful Sweet and Sour Gurame Fish, perfect for a delicious family meal or special occasion.
