Batagor Tahu: Indonesian Fried Tofu with Peanut Sauce

Ingredients:

  • 2 blocks of white tofu
  • 1 chicken egg
  • 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 5 cloves of garlic
  • Scallions (green onions), finely chopped
  • 1 packet of instant peanut sauce (bumbu pecel)
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Cooking oil

Steps:

  1. Prepare the Tofu: Start by mashing the tofu in a bowl until it becomes a smooth and consistent texture.

  2. Blend Aromatics: In a mortar and pestle or blender, grind the garlic cloves, salt, and pepper until a fine paste forms.

  3. Combine Ingredients: Add the garlic paste to the mashed tofu. Then, mix in the flour, egg, and chopped scallions. Stir the mixture until all ingredients are evenly distributed.

  4. Form the Batagor: Heat cooking oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat. Using a spoon, shape the tofu mixture into small patties or balls. Carefully drop them into the hot oil.

  5. Fry Until Golden: Fry the batagor pieces until they turn golden brown and crispy. This should take about 3-5 minutes per batch. Once fried, remove them from the oil and let them drain on a paper towel-lined plate to remove excess oil.

  6. Prepare the Peanut Sauce: In a bowl, dissolve the instant peanut sauce packet with hot water. Adjust the consistency to your liking by adding more or less water. If you prefer a spicier sauce, blend in some ground chilies or chili paste.

  7. Serve: Once the batagor has cooled slightly, cut them into bite-sized pieces. Pour the prepared peanut sauce over the batagor or serve it on the side for dipping. Enjoy your delicious batagor tahu warm, as a delightful snack or appetizer.

Tips:

  • For a richer flavor, consider adding a splash of soy sauce or a pinch of sugar to the tofu mixture.
  • Garnish with chopped peanuts and fresh cilantro for an extra burst of flavor and texture.
  • Serve with a side of fresh cucumber slices and lime wedges to balance the richness of the dish.

Batagor Tahu is a beloved Indonesian street food that combines the creamy texture of tofu with the savory crunch of deep frying, all brought together by a luscious peanut sauce. Perfect for any occasion, this dish is sure to delight your taste buds and impress your guests. Enjoy this delightful culinary journey with every bite!
