Tahu Fantasi Recipe

Tahu Fantasi, a delightful Indonesian dish, is a scrumptious combination of tofu, vegetables, and seasonings, encased in a crispy coating. Perfect for a savory snack or a side dish, this recipe brings together the rich flavors of tofu, carrots, and a medley of seasonings. Here’s how to create this culinary wonder:

Ingredients:

  • 400 grams of tofu (approximately 5 large pieces)
  • 1 large carrot
  • 1 sheet of bihun (rice vermicelli)
  • 1 stalk of green onion
  • 1 stalk of celery
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 sachet of Masako (seasoning powder)
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground pepper

For the Coating:

  • 2 tablespoons tapioca flour
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 2 large eggs
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Bihun: Soak the bihun in hot water until it expands and softens. Drain well and set aside.

  2. Prepare the Vegetables and Tofu:

    • Mash the tofu until smooth.
    • Grate the carrot finely.
    • Chop the celery and slice the green onion thinly.
  3. Combine Ingredients:

    • In a large bowl, mix the mashed tofu, grated carrot, chopped celery, and sliced green onion.
    • Add the minced garlic, Masako seasoning powder, salt, and ground pepper. Adjust the seasoning according to your taste.
    • Beat the eggs and incorporate them into the mixture. Stir until everything is well combined.
  4. Prepare the Steaming Pan:

    • Grease a baking pan or steaming mold with oil. For ease of removal, you can also line it with baking paper if using a brownie pan.
  5. Steam the Mixture:

    • Pour the tofu mixture into the prepared pan.
    • Steam the mixture for about 30 minutes. To avoid water dripping onto the dish, cover the steaming pot with a clean cloth.
  6. Cool and Slice:

    • Once steamed, remove the pan from the steamer and let it cool. For easier slicing, you can refrigerate it for a while.
    • Once cooled and firmed up, cut the tofu mixture into pieces according to your preference.
  7. Prepare the Coating:

    • In a bowl, mix the tapioca flour with water to create a smooth paste.
    • Add the eggs, salt, and pepper. Whisk until well combined.
  8. Fry the Tahu Fantasi:

    • Dip each tofu piece into the coating mixture, ensuring it is evenly coated.
    • Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Fry the coated tofu pieces until golden and crispy on all sides. Drain on paper towels.
  9. Serve:

    • Enjoy your Tahu Fantasi with fresh chili or sambal sauce for an extra kick.
