Tahu Bakwan: Crispy Indonesian Tofu Fritters

Ingredients:

  • 3 blocks of firm tofu
  • 1 egg
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1 shallot
  • 3 bird’s eye chilies
  • 1 packet all-purpose flour
  • 1 scallion
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Cooking oil for frying

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Ingredients:

    • Thinly slice the shallot, garlic clove, bird’s eye chilies, and scallion.
    • Crumble the tofu into small pieces and place it in a mixing bowl.
  2. Mix the Batter:

    • Beat the egg and add it to the bowl with crumbled tofu.
    • Add the sliced shallot, garlic, chilies, and scallion to the bowl.
    • Gradually mix in the all-purpose flour until you achieve a well-combined batter.
    • Season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste, ensuring everything is evenly distributed.
  3. Fry the Tahu Bakwan:

    • Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a frying pan over medium heat.
    • Once the oil is hot, drop spoonfuls of the batter into the pan, flattening them slightly to form fritters.
    • Fry until each fritter is golden brown and crispy, turning them as needed to ensure even cooking.
    • Remove the fritters from the oil and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  4. Serve:

    • Serve the tahu bakwan hot, straight from the pan, for the best taste and texture.
