Mexican Style Bunuelos Recipe – Sweet Fritter

Total Time: 35 minutes
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Servings: 4
Cuisine: Mexican
Course: Dessert
Diet: Eggetarian

Ingredients:

Ingredient Quantity
All Purpose Flour (Maida) 1 1/2 cups
Baking Powder 1 teaspoon
Sugar 4 teaspoons
Butter 50 grams
Whole Egg 1
Milk 1/2 cup
Salt 1 pinch
Sunflower Oil For frying
Caster Sugar 2 teaspoons
Cinnamon Powder (Dalchini) 1 teaspoon

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Dry Ingredients
In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and sugar. Mix well and set aside for later use.

  2. Prepare Wet Ingredients
In a separate bowl, crack the egg and add the milk, melted butter, and a pinch of salt. Whisk them together until they are fully combined and smooth.

  3. Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures
Gradually add the wet ingredients into the dry flour mixture. Stir gently as you pour in the wet ingredients, and knead the mixture into a smooth, soft dough. Ensure the dough is non-sticky and pliable. This should take about 5 minutes of kneading.

  4. Rest the Dough
Once kneaded, cover the dough with a cloth and allow it to rest for approximately 10 minutes. This helps to relax the dough, making it easier to shape.

  5. Heat the Oil
While the dough rests, heat a small amount of sunflower oil in a deep frying pan (kadai) over medium heat. The oil should be deep enough to submerge the dough balls. To check if the oil is ready, pinch off a small piece of dough and drop it into the hot oil. If the dough rises to the surface immediately, the oil is hot enough for frying.

  6. Shape the Dough
After the dough has rested, pinch off small portions of dough and roll them into small balls. Aim for uniform-sized dough balls for even frying.

  7. Fry the Bunuelos
Carefully place the shaped dough balls into the hot oil, one by one, ensuring they do not stick together. Fry them until they turn a golden light brown color on all sides. This should take about 3–4 minutes per batch.

  8. Drain and Coat
Once fried, remove the bunuelos from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Allow them to cool slightly before moving to the next step.

  9. Cinnamon Sugar Coating
In a small bowl, mix the caster sugar and cinnamon powder. While the bunuelos are still warm, toss them in the cinnamon-sugar mixture until they are evenly coated.

  10. Serve
Serve the Mexican Style Bunuelos immediately as a delightful dessert. They pair beautifully with a warm mug of Hot Chocolate or a glass of warm milk. These fritters can also be enjoyed as a sweet treat after a hearty meal like Mexican Vegetarian Bean & Cheese Enchiladas.

Tips and Variations:

  • Crispy Texture: If you prefer your bunuelos extra crispy, you can flatten the dough balls slightly before frying.
  • Flavor Variations: For a twist, you can add a pinch of vanilla extract to the wet ingredients for added flavor.
  • For a Softer Texture: If you like your bunuelos softer, reduce the frying time slightly or use a bit more butter in the dough mixture.

Enjoy these classic Mexican-style sweet fritters as a satisfying and delicious treat, perfect for any occasion!
