Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup gram flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 egg
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 potato, thinly sliced
  • Water (as needed for the batter)
  • Optional: spinach, eggplant, cabbage, fresh chili pepper, peas, cauliflower, zucchini

Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the gram flour, salt, red chili powder, coriander powder, baking soda, and black pepper. Mix well to ensure all the dry ingredients are evenly distributed.

  2. Crack an egg into the bowl and whisk it lightly before adding it to the dry ingredients. Mix everything together until you get a thick, smooth batter.

  3. Gradually add water to the batter, a little at a time, stirring continuously until you achieve a thick, smooth consistency. The batter should coat the back of a spoon without dripping too much.

  4. Heat oil in a deep frying pan or pot over medium-high heat. Make sure the oil is hot enough for frying.

  5. Take spoonfuls of the batter and carefully drop them into the hot oil. Fry the pakoras in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan.

  6. Fry the pakoras for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they turn golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove them from the oil and transfer them to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.

  7. Serve the hot and crispy Potato Pakoras immediately with your favorite chutney or sauce. Enjoy them as a snack or appetizer with family and friends!

Additional Tips:

  • Feel free to customize your pakoras by adding finely chopped vegetables like spinach, eggplant, cabbage, fresh chili pepper, peas, cauliflower, or zucchini to the batter for extra flavor and nutrition.
  • Adjust the spice level according to your taste preferences by increasing or decreasing the amount of red chili powder and black pepper.
  • Make sure the oil is hot enough before frying the pakoras to ensure they cook evenly and become crispy.
  • For a healthier option, you can also bake the pakoras in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for about 20-25 minutes, flipping them halfway through, until they are golden brown and crisp.

Enjoy making and savoring these delicious Potato Pakoras! They’re sure to be a hit at any gathering or as a tasty snack for yourself.
