Meanwhile, sift the all-purpose flour into a large bowl and set it aside. Once the rice has cooled down, add it to the flour and pour in the yeast mixture that was dissolved in the milk. Add the zest of one orange and a pinch of ground cinnamon for flavor. Stir the ingredients together thoroughly using a spoon, ensuring the mixture is well combined. Let the dough rest for about 30 minutes to allow it to rise. -
Form the Zeppole:
After the dough has rested, lightly flour a work surface and transfer the dough. Flatten it slightly and begin shaping the mixture into long, slender sticks approximately 10 cm in length. These will become your zeppole. -
Prepare the Sauce:
For the sauce, squeeze the juice from two fresh oranges (roughly 65ml) and strain it through a fine sieve to remove any pulp or seeds. Fry the Zeppole:
Heat the peanut oil in a large pan over medium heat until it reaches about 170°C. Carefully lower the zeppole into the hot oil and fry them until they are golden and crisp on all sides. You may need to fry them in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan. -
Serve:
Once the zeppole are perfectly golden, remove them from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain any excess oil. Serve the zeppole warm, drizzled with the delicious orange-honey sauce, and enjoy these irresistible treats!
