Siomay with Snapper Filling

Indulge in the delightful flavors of homemade Siomay, featuring a delectable snapper filling encased in delicate wonton wrappers. This savory treat, perfect for a snack or appetizer, combines fresh snapper with aromatic spices and vegetables, steamed to perfection, and then lightly fried for a crispy finish.

Ingredients:

  • For the Filling:

    • 2 whole snapper (filleted and flesh removed)
    • 2 cloves garlic
    • 2 shallots
    • 1 stalk celery
    • 2 carrots (grated)
    • 1 spring onion (finely chopped)
    • 1 egg
    • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    • Salt to taste
    • Black pepper to taste
  • For Assembly:

    • Wonton wrappers

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Filling:

    • Place the snapper flesh in a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth.
    • Add the garlic, shallots, and celery to the blender. Blend again until all ingredients are well combined.
    • Transfer the mixture to a large bowl. Stir in the grated carrots, chopped spring onion, egg, and flour. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Mix thoroughly until the filling is well integrated.
  2. Assemble the Siomay:

    • Lay a wonton wrapper on a clean surface. Place a spoonful of the snapper filling in the center of the wrapper.
    • Fold the edges of the wrapper over the filling, pleating as necessary to create a neat parcel. The wrapper should be sealed well to encase the filling.
  3. Steam the Siomay:

    • Arrange the filled wontons in a steamer basket, making sure they are not touching each other. Steam over medium heat for 25 minutes. Remove from the steamer and allow to cool slightly.
  4. Fry the Siomay:

    • Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, gently place the steamed siomay into the pan. Fry until the siomay turn golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per side.
    • Remove from the pan and drain on paper towels.
  5. Serve:

    • Enjoy the Siomay warm, with a dipping sauce of your choice, such as soy sauce, chili sauce, or a tangy vinegar-based sauce.

This delightful Siomay is sure to be a hit, combining the freshness of snapper with the crispy, savory goodness of a fried exterior. Perfect for sharing with family and friends, or as a satisfying snack any time of day.
