- 1 tsp MSG (optional)
- 1 cup buttermilk, divided
- 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
- 1 cup cracker crumbs
- 1 can cream of mushroom soup
- 1 cup milk
- Additional salt, pepper, and garlic to taste
Instructions:
-
Prepare the Steaks:
- Season cube steaks with seasoned salt, salt, pepper, garlic, and MSG (if using), then set them aside for 15 minutes to marinate.
-
Coat the Steaks:
- In a medium bowl or plastic bag, combine flour and the remainder of spices.
- Pour 1/2 cup of buttermilk into a shallow bowl.
- Place cracker crumbs in another medium bowl or plastic bag.
- Coat each cube steak with the flour mixture, then dip it into the buttermilk, and finally coat it with cracker crumbs, pressing the crumbs gently to help them adhere.
-
Fry the Steaks:
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Cook the coated steaks in the hot oil until they are golden brown and cooked to your desired level of doneness.
- Once cooked, remove the steaks from the skillet and place them on paper towels to drain, while keeping them warm.
-
Make the Gravy:
- Drain excess grease from the skillet, but retain the browned particles of breading.
- Add the cream of mushroom soup and 1 cup of buttermilk or milk to the skillet, stirring to combine and break up the browned breading.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium.
- Adjust the seasonings as desired with additional salt, pepper, and garlic.
-
