Sweet and Spicy Crispy Chicken (Ayam Tepung Asam Manis)

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 kg chicken (cut into bite-sized cubes)
  • 1 packet of seasoned flour mix (I use Mamasuka brand)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 5 bird’s eye chilies (cabe setan), sliced
  • 1 large onion
  • 5 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons chili sauce
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon flavor enhancer (optional)
  • Cooking oil
  • 2 tablespoons palm sugar (gula merah)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Chicken:

    • Cut the chicken into bite-sized cubes according to your preference.
  2. Coat the Chicken:

    • In one bowl, beat the eggs. In another bowl, place the seasoned flour mix.
    • Dip each piece of chicken into the beaten eggs, then coat thoroughly with the seasoned flour mix.
    • Heat cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Fry the coated chicken pieces until golden brown and crispy. Remove from the pan and drain on paper towels.
  3. Prepare the Sauce:

    • In a separate pan, heat a small amount of oil over medium heat.
    • Add the minced garlic, sliced onions, and bird’s eye chilies. Sauté until fragrant and the onions become translucent.
    • Add the chopped tomato, palm sugar, and a pinch of flavor enhancer if using. Stir until the tomato softens and the sugar dissolves.
    • Pour in a small amount of water and stir in the chili sauce. Cook until the sauce thickens slightly. Adjust the seasoning to taste.
  4. Combine and Serve:

    • Gently toss the crispy chicken pieces into the sauce, ensuring they are well-coated.
    • Serve hot, garnished with extra chopped chilies or fresh herbs if desired.
