Ingredients

Main Ingredients Quantity
Firm tofu 18 pieces
Garlic 2 cloves
Shallots 3 shallots
Black pepper to taste
Sugar to taste
Salt to taste
Bird’s eye chili 3, optional
Baking powder 2 teaspoons

Sauce Ingredients

Sauce Ingredients Quantity
Mayonnaise 3 tablespoons
Chili sauce 2 tablespoons
Oyster sauce ½ teaspoon

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tofu: Begin by washing the tofu thoroughly. Place it in a clean cloth and gently press to remove excess moisture. Transfer the tofu to a mixing bowl.

  2. Make the Spice Mixture: In a mortar and pestle, grind the garlic, shallots, salt, sugar, and black pepper until you achieve a smooth paste. Combine this mixture with the tofu in the bowl and mix well.

  3. Add Baking Powder: Incorporate the baking powder into the tofu mixture, stirring until evenly distributed.

  4. Incorporate Chili: If using, finely slice the bird’s eye chili and add it to the mixture. Stir again and allow the mixture to rest for 1 to 2 hours to let the flavors meld.

  5. Shape the Tofu Balls: After resting, divide the tofu mixture into small portions and shape them into balls.

  6. Fry the Tofu Balls: Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Fry the tofu balls until they are golden brown and crispy. Once done, drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.

  7. Prepare the Sauce: In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, chili sauce, and oyster sauce until well combined.

  8. Serve: Plate the crispy tofu balls and serve with the sauce on the side for dipping. Enjoy your homemade Tahu Bulat!

This delightful dish combines the crispy texture of fried tofu with a flavorful sauce, making it the ultimate snack or appetizer for any occasion.
