Tahu Geprek Sambal Bawang: Crispy Tofu with Spicy Garlic Sambal

Ingredients:

  • 2 medium-sized tofu blocks (fried)
  • For the Sambal:
    • 5 bird’s eye chilies (adjust to taste)
    • 1 garlic clove
    • Salt to taste
    • 1 tablespoon hot oil

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Tofu:

    • Begin by frying the tofu blocks until they are golden and crispy. Set them aside to cool slightly.
  2. Make the Sambal:

    • In a mortar and pestle or a food processor, combine the bird’s eye chilies and garlic clove. Grind or blend them into a smooth paste.
    • Add salt to taste. Continue to blend until well combined.
  3. Add Hot Oil:

    • In a small pan, heat the oil until it is very hot. Carefully pour the hot oil over the sambal mixture, stirring quickly to incorporate.
  4. Assemble the Dish:

    • Place the fried tofu blocks on a serving plate. Gently press or “smash” the tofu using a spoon or the back of a spatula, so that it slightly breaks apart.
    • Spoon the prepared sambal generously over the tofu.
  5. Serve:

    • Enjoy the tahu geprek sambal bawang with warm steamed rice and crispy crackers for a delightful meal.

This simple yet flavorful dish brings together the crispiness of fried tofu with a punchy, spicy sambal, making it a perfect complement to a bowl of rice and a side of crunchy krupuk.
