Crispy Stick Tempe Recipe

Ingredients:

Ingredient Quantity
Tempe 2 blocks (papan tempe)
Dipping Batter 1
All-purpose flour To taste
Water Enough to make a thick batter
Salt To taste
Black pepper To taste
Dipping Batter 2
Bread crumbs (or panko) Enough to coat the tempe

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Tempe: Cut the tempe into long strips, ensuring they are evenly sized for frying.

  2. Steam the Tempe: Before frying, steam the tempe pieces for about 10 minutes to reduce the strong soybean odor and make them tender.

  3. Dipping Batter 1: In a shallow dish, mix the all-purpose flour, water, salt, and black pepper to create a thick batter. It should be thick enough to coat the tempe but not too runny.

  4. Coating: Dip each steamed tempe strip into the batter from the first dish (Dipping Batter 1) and ensure it’s fully coated.

  5. Bread Crumb Coating: Immediately roll the coated tempe into bread crumbs (Dipping Batter 2), pressing gently so they stick well.

  6. Storage Tip: If you’re making a batch for future use, you can freeze the breaded tempe sticks at this stage. This makes them easy to fry up later when you’re short on time!

  7. Frying: When ready to serve, heat oil in a pan and fry the tempe sticks until golden and crispy. Remove and drain any excess oil.
