Ingredients

Ingredient Amount
Tempe (sliced thin) 2 pieces
For the Batter:
Seasoned flour mix 1 pack
All-purpose flour 2 tablespoons
Water (as needed) To achieve desired consistency
For the Red Sauce:
Garlic (minced) 2 cloves
Shallots (sliced) 3 pieces
Red chilies 2 pieces
Bird’s eye chilies 5 pieces
Tomato (chopped) 1 piece
Cooking oil As needed
Sweet soy sauce 2 tablespoons
Oyster sauce 1 tablespoon
Water As needed
Sugar To taste
Salt To taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Batter: In a mixing bowl, combine the seasoned flour mix, all-purpose flour, and enough water to achieve a smooth batter. Adjust the water quantity until the batter reaches your desired thickness.

  2. Fry the Tempeh: Dip the sliced tempeh into the batter, ensuring each piece is well coated. Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Once hot, carefully add the coated tempeh slices and fry them until golden brown and crispy. Remove from the pan and drain on paper towels to absorb excess oil.

  3. Make the Red Sauce: In a blender or food processor, combine the minced garlic, sliced shallots, red chilies, bird’s eye chilies, and chopped tomato. Blend until smooth.

  4. Cook the Sauce: In a separate pan, heat a little oil over medium heat. Pour in the blended sauce and sauté until fragrant. Add the sweet soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, and salt, adjusting to your taste. Stir well and cook for a few minutes.

  5. Combine and Serve: If the sauce appears too thick, add a little water to prevent burning and allow it to simmer for a couple of minutes until heated through. Gently add the fried tempeh to the sauce, stirring to coat the tempeh evenly in the sambal. Once combined, remove from heat.

  6. Enjoy: Serve your Tempe Tepung Sambal Merah warm, and enjoy it as a delicious side dish or as part of a larger Indonesian meal.
