Ingredients:

For the Chocolate Pastry:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Filling:

  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/4 cups milk
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 ripe bananas

For the Topping:

  • 2 cups whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Chocolate shavings (optional)

Instructions:

Making the Chocolate Pastry:

  1. In a food processor or a bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, cocoa, and salt. Mix until well blended.
  2. Add the butter and mix until fine crumbs form. You can also rub the butter in with your fingers.
  3. Add the egg yolk and vanilla extract, then mix until blended.
  4. Lightly spray a 9-inch pie pan with non-stick spray. Pour the pastry mixture into the pan and press it evenly over the bottom, up the sides, and across the rim. You can pinch in a decorative edge or press it with the tines of a fork.
  5. Bake the crust in a preheated 350°F oven until it’s slightly darker around the edges, about 15 to 18 minutes.
  6. Let the crust cool on a rack for at least 1 hour.

Making the Filling:

  1. In a 2-quart pan, combine 3/4 cup sugar, cornstarch, and salt.
  2. Add the milk and whisk until well blended.
  3. Whisk the mixture over medium heat until it boils and thickens, being careful not to scorch it.
  4. Remove the mixture from the heat.
  5. In a small bowl, beat the egg yolks until blended.
  6. Stir about 1/2 cup of the hot milk mixture into the yolks, then add this mixture back to the pan.
  7. Return the pan to medium-low heat and stir until the mixture just begins to bubble, about 2 minutes.
  8. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the butter and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
  9. Spread a thin layer of the warm custard over the bottom of the cooled pastry crust.
  10. Peel the bananas and slice half of them into the pie, covering the bottom evenly.
  11. Pour half of the warm custard evenly over the bananas.
  12. Repeat the layering process with the remaining bananas and custard.
  13. Cover the surface of the custard with plastic wrap and chill the pie until cold, at least 2 hours.

Making the Topping:

  1. In a bowl, use a mixer on high speed to beat the whipping cream, remaining sugar, and vanilla extract until the mixture holds soft peaks.
  2. Mound the whipped cream on top of the chilled pie and swirl it to cover.
  3. If desired, sprinkle chocolate shavings over the whipped cream topping.

Serving:

Once prepared, this Old-Fashioned Banana Cream Pie with Chocolate Pastry is best served chilled, allowing all the flavors to meld together beautifully. 🥧 Each slice is a delightful indulgence, perfect for any dessert occasion. Enjoy the creamy custard, the sweetness of ripe bananas, and the richness of chocolate pastry in every scrumptious bite!
