Ingredients:

2 cups All-purpose flour
2 cups Sugar
1 tsp Baking soda
1/4 tsp Salt
1 cup Butter
1/3 cup Unsweetened cocoa powder
2 Eggs
1/2 cup Buttermilk
1 1/2 tsp Vanilla extract
1/4 cup Butter (for frosting)
3 tbsp Buttermilk (for frosting)
2 1/4 cups Powdered sugar (for frosting)
1/2 tsp Vanilla extract (for frosting)
Optional: 3/4 cup coarsely chopped pecans

Instructions:

For the Cake:

  1. Grease a 15x10x1 inch baking pan; set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
  3. In a medium saucepan, combine the butter, cocoa powder, and 1 cup of water.
  4. Bring the mixture just to boiling, stirring constantly.
  5. Remove from heat and add the chocolate mixture to the dry mixture in the large bowl.
  6. Beat with an electric mixer on medium to high speed until thoroughly combined.
  7. Add the eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla extract.
  8. Beat for 1 minute; the batter will be thin.
  9. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
  10. Bake in a preheated 350°F (175°C) oven for about 25 minutes or until a wooden toothpick comes out clean when inserted into the center of the cake.
  11. While the cake is still warm, pour the warm chocolate buttermilk frosting over it, spreading evenly.
  12. Place the cake in the pan on a wire rack and allow it to cool thoroughly before cutting.

For the Chocolate-Buttermilk Frosting:

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the 1/4 cup of butter, cocoa powder, and 3 tablespoons of buttermilk.

  3. Add the sifted powdered sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
  4. Beat the frosting until smooth.
