Instructions

1. Prepare the Sponge Cake Base

  • Step 1: Crack the eggs (make sure they’re at room temperature) into a mixing bowl. Add the sugar and vanilla extract. Whisk the mixture for several minutes until it becomes light, fluffy, and pale in color.
  • Step 2: Sift the flour to remove lumps and gently fold it into the egg mixture using a spatula. Be careful not to deflate the airy consistency.
  • Step 3: Divide the batter into two equal portions and transfer each into a separate bowl.

2. Add Cocoa to Half the Batter

  • Step 4: Sift the cocoa powder and gently incorporate it into one portion of the batter, mixing until smooth and evenly combined.

3. Bake the Cake Layers

  • Step 5: Preheat your oven to 350Β°F (175Β°C). Prepare a 12×15-inch (30×38 cm) baking tray by greasing it and lining it with parchment paper.
  • Step 6: Pour the plain batter onto the prepared tray and spread it evenly with a spatula to ensure a uniform layer. Repeat the process with the cocoa batter, using a separate tray or layering carefully if combining.
  • Step 7: Bake the sponge layers for 8-10 minutes, or until they spring back lightly when touched.

4. Cool the Cake Layers

  • Step 8: Remove the sponge layers from the oven. Cover each with parchment paper and a clean kitchen towel to prevent drying out as they cool.

5. Assemble the Nutella Swirls

  • Step 9: Once the sponge layers reach room temperature, carefully peel off the parchment paper. Trim the edges with a sharp knife to create neat, straight sides.
  • Step 10: Spread a generous layer of Nutella evenly over the surface of the cocoa sponge layer.
  • Step 11: Starting from one short end, gently roll the sponge into a tight log. Wrap the roll securely in parchment paper and twist the ends to seal. Chill the log for 20 minutes to firm it up for easier slicing.

6. Slice and Decorate

  • Step 12: Once chilled, slice the log into 12 equal swirls.
  • Step 13: Melt the dark chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pot of simmering water (double boiler method). Dip one side of each swirl into the melted chocolate and allow the excess to drip off.
  • Step 14: Place the swirls on a cooling rack or parchment-lined tray until the chocolate sets completely.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the Nutella Swirls on a beautiful dessert platter with a sprinkling of powdered sugar or a few fresh berries for added charm. They pair wonderfully with a hot cup of coffee or a glass of milk.
