Siomay Ayam Udang (Chicken and Shrimp Siomay)

Ingredients

  • 150 grams chicken, blended
  • 150 grams shrimp, coarsely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1 clove garlic, blended with chicken
  • 1 carrot, grated (reserve a bit for garnish)
  • 1 stalk scallion, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • Salt, to taste
  • Pepper, to taste
  • Siomay wrappers

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Filling:

    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the blended chicken, coarsely chopped shrimp, egg, blended garlic, grated carrot (reserve a small amount for garnish), and chopped scallion.
    • Add the oyster sauce, sesame oil, salt, and pepper. Mix all ingredients thoroughly until well combined.
  2. Prepare the Wrappers:

    • Lightly brush each siomay wrapper with oil to prevent sticking and to make them easier to handle.
  3. Assemble the Siomay:

    • Place a generous spoonful of the filling onto the center of each wrapper.
    • Fold the edges of the wrapper up around the filling, leaving the top exposed. This will give the siomay its classic shape.
    • Sprinkle a small amount of the reserved grated carrot on top of each siomay for garnish.
  4. Steam the Siomay:

    • Preheat a steamer.
    • Arrange the siomay in the steamer basket, ensuring they are not touching each other to allow even cooking.
    • Steam the siomay over medium heat for about 15 minutes or until the filling is cooked through and the wrappers are tender.
  5. Serve:

    • Remove the siomay from the steamer and let cool slightly before serving.
    • Serve the siomay warm, accompanied by your favorite dipping sauce, such as soy sauce with a dash of sesame oil or a spicy chili sauce.

Notes

  • Blending and Chopping: Ensure that the chicken and garlic are well blended to create a smooth mixture, while the shrimp should be coarsely chopped to retain some texture in the filling.
  • Siomay Wrappers: Siomay wrappers can usually be found in the frozen section of Asian grocery stores. If you can’t find siomay wrappers, you can use wonton wrappers as a substitute.
  • Steamer: If you don’t have a traditional steamer, you can use a makeshift steamer by placing a heatproof plate on a rack inside a large pot with a lid.

Enjoy this delightful Siomay Ayam Udang as a savory appetizer or a main course, perfect for sharing with family and friends!
