Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

Ingredient Quantity
Kaddu (Parangikai/Pumpkin) – cubed 1-1/2 cups
Green peas (Matar) – cooked 1/2 cup
Fresh coconut – grated 2 tablespoons
Amchur (Dry Mango Powder) 2 teaspoons
Garam masala powder 1 teaspoon
Red Chilli powder 2 teaspoons
Coconut Oil 1 tablespoon
Mustard seeds 1 teaspoon
Chana dal (Bengal Gram Dal) 1 teaspoon
Curry leaves 5 leaves
Water 2 cups
Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Boil the Pumpkin: Begin by bringing a pot of water to a boil. Once boiling, add the cubed pumpkin and cook for about 5 to 10 minutes, or until the pumpkin is halfway cooked. Drain the water and set the pumpkin aside.

  2. Prepare the Tempering: In a heavy wok or skillet, heat the coconut oil over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the mustard seeds and sauté until they begin to splutter.

  3. Add Chana Dal: Incorporate the chana dal into the wok and fry until it turns a lovely golden brown.

  4. Sauté the Curry Leaves: Add the curry leaves to the wok and fry for just a few seconds to release their aroma.

  5. Combine Ingredients: Now, add the cooked pumpkin cubes and the cooked green peas to the wok. Sprinkle in the amchur powder, garam masala, and red chili powder. Mix well to ensure the spices coat the vegetables evenly. Let this mixture cook for about a minute.

  6. Final Touches: Season with salt to taste, then add the grated coconut. Stir everything together and cover the wok. Allow it to cook for an additional 3 to 5 minutes on low heat, letting the flavors meld beautifully.

  7. Serve: Your delightful Pumpkin Peas Palya is ready to be served! Enjoy it alongside Tomato Onion Sambar and steamed rice for a satisfying weekday meal. For a refreshing touch, consider serving it with a side of curry leaves buttermilk.

This vibrant Pumpkin Peas Palya not only showcases the rich flavors of South Indian cuisine but also offers a nourishing, vegetarian option that pairs perfectly with various dishes. Each bite is a harmonious blend of spices, making it a comforting addition to your lunch table.
