Refreshing Nasal Irrigation Solution

Description

This nasal irrigation recipe, derived from advice by several ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) specialists, offers a simple yet effective way to cleanse nasal passages. Although initially suggested to include vodka, I later learned from another ENT that the vodka isn’t necessary. I’ve been using this remedy for over 30 years, and it’s become a staple in my home wellness routine. A humorous side note: after my children grew up and moved out, I discovered that one of my daughters had been sneaking sips of the vodka and replacing it with water. Thankfully, the solution still worked perfectly well without it! 😂

Yield

1 pint

Ingredients

  • 1 pint warm water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon vodka (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a clean bowl, mix together the warm water, salt, baking soda, and vodka if you choose to use it. Stir until the salt and baking soda are fully dissolved.

  2. Prepare for Use: Using a bulb syringe or a nasal irrigation device, carefully draw up the solution.

  3. Flush Nasal Passages: Bend over a sink or toilet bowl. Gently insert the nozzle into one nostril and slowly squeeze the bulb or device to flush the solution up the nostril. If the nasal passages are clear, the water should flow out of the opposite nostril.

  4. Observe: Sometimes, the solution may come back out of the same nostril. It’s also normal if a small amount of the solution drips down the back of your throat.

  5. Adjust Temperature: For best results, use warm water. It helps to loosen mucus more effectively, but ensure it’s not too hot to avoid any discomfort.

  6. Optional Use: Some people use this mixture similarly to commercial saline solutions, such as “Ocean,” to moisturize and clear nasal passages.

This soothing remedy is a fantastic way to relieve nasal congestion and improve breathing. Keep the mixture in a clean container, and make sure to use it fresh each time. Enjoy a clearer and more comfortable nasal experience!
