Nasi Tim Ayam Jamur Versi Rice Cooker: A Savory Indonesian Delight
Ingredients:
- Chicken breast, skinless, diced (amount as needed)
- Shiitake mushrooms (increase quantity if preferred)
- Garlic, finely chopped (to taste)
- Onion, diced small
- Sugar, salt, and pepper (to taste)
- Mushroom stock (optional)
- Sweet soy sauce (kecap manis)
- Soy sauce (kecap asin)
- Oyster sauce
- Fish sauce
- Sesame oil
- Worcestershire sauce
- Cooking wine (optional)
- Water (as needed, preferably a bit more)
- Cooking oil
Instructions:
-
Prepare the Mushrooms:
- Clean the shiitake mushrooms thoroughly and soak them until tender. For best results, soak them overnight. Once softened, slice them thinly.
-
Sauté Aromatics:
- Heat a splash of cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the chopped garlic and diced onion. Sauté until fragrant and translucent.
-
Cook the Chicken and Mushrooms:
- Add the diced chicken breast and sliced mushrooms to the pan. Stir-fry until the chicken turns white and the mushrooms start to soften. Season with sugar, salt, pepper, and mushroom stock (if using). Adjust the seasoning according to taste.
-
Flavor Enhancements:
- Pour in a splash of water and add sweet soy sauce, soy sauce, oyster sauce, fish sauce, sesame oil, Worcestershire sauce, and cooking wine (if using). Mix well and let it simmer until the chicken is browned and cooked through.
-
Separate Chicken and Sauce:
- Once the chicken is cooked and well-seasoned, separate the chicken and mushrooms from the sauce. Set aside.
-
Prepare Rice Cooker:
- Rinse the rice thoroughly under cold water until the water runs clear. Transfer the cleaned rice to the rice cooker. Note: Instead of using a specific measurement, you can use the width of your finger as a guide for the amount of water needed, as per personal preference.
-
Combine Ingredients:
- Add the cooked chicken and mushrooms on top of the rice in the rice cooker. Gently stir to combine.
-
Cook the Dish:
- Close the rice cooker lid and set it to cook. Once the rice cooker switches to the “keep warm” mode, let it sit for a few minutes before opening. This allows the flavors to meld together.
-
Enjoy:
- Your Nasi Tim Ayam Jamur is ready to serve! This dish pairs well with a simple side salad or steamed vegetables.

Feel free to adjust the seasoning to your taste and experiment with additional vegetables if desired. The beauty of this recipe lies in its flexibility and the ease of preparation using a rice cooker. Enjoy this comforting Indonesian dish with family and friends!
