Tahu Isi Mercon: Spicy Stuffed Tofu

Ingredients

Ingredient Quantity
Cabbage (Kol/Kubis) 1/2 head
Large Carrots (Wortel) 2
Fried Tofu (Tahu Isi) To taste
Tempe To taste
Spice Paste
Curly Chili Peppers 9
Red Chili Peppers 3
Shallots 3 cloves
Garlic 1 clove
Bird’s Eye Chili (Rawit Setan) 10
Salt To taste
Sugar To taste
Chili Sauce 3 tablespoons
Chili Powder 2 tablespoons
Oyster Sauce To taste
Mushroom Stock or Seasoning To taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tofu: Soak the tofu in hot water to eliminate any unpleasant odor, then drain, gently tearing the top and removing a bit of the filling. Set aside.

  2. Make the Spice Paste: Blend or grind the curly chili peppers, red chili peppers, shallots, garlic, and bird’s eye chilies until well mixed but not too fine.

  3. Sauté the Spice Paste: In a pan, sauté the spice paste until fragrant and cooked through. Be cautious of the spiciness—wear a mask if needed!

  4. Cook the Filling: Add the filling ingredients (cabbage, carrots, tempe, and any other preferred veggies) to the sautéed spices, along with a little water. Cook until softened, tasting and adjusting seasoning as necessary.

  5. Stuff the Tofu: Fill the prepared tofu with the spiced mixture. For an extra kick, add sliced bird’s eye chili to the filling.

  6. Serve and Enjoy: Your Tahu Isi Mercon is ready to serve! Enjoy the spicy delight!

Tips:

  • Adjust the number of chilies based on your heat preference.
  • Serve with a side of sweet soy sauce for a delicious contrast.
