Recipe: Homemade Hot Mustard

🕒 Total Time: 40 minutes
🥘 Yield: Makes 12 pint jars

Description:
Can’t believe I didn’t find a recipe for this here. Great condiment for chicken or pork. I use it as I would a BBQ sauce. Cook onto chicken or pork the last few minutes of grilling. It’s also great on hot dogs and sandwiches. You may seed some of the peppers to cut down on the heat. Everyone I have given this to is hooked!

Ingredients:

  • 5 pounds banana peppers
  • 1 quart mustard
  • 1 cup vinegar
  • 6 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 cups water

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Pepper Puree:

    • Puree about 5 pounds of banana peppers in a food processor until smooth.
  2. Mix Mustard Base:

    • In a stockpot, combine mustard, vinegar, and sugar.
    • Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is fully dissolved.
  3. Combine Pepper Puree:

    • Add the prepared pepper puree to the stockpot with the mustard base.
    • Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat.
  4. Prepare Thickening Agent:

    • In a separate bowl, mix 1 1/2 cups of flour with 2 cups of water.
    • Whisk until fully dissolved and no lumps remain.
  5. Incorporate Thickening Agent:

    • Gradually pour the flour-water mixture into the boiling pepper-mustard mixture.
    • Stir constantly to prevent lumps from forming.
  6. Thicken the Sauce:

    • Continue cooking the mixture, stirring frequently, until it reaches your desired consistency.
    • The sauce should thicken noticeably as it cooks.
  7. Sterilize Jars:

    • While the sauce is cooking, prepare your canning jars according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
    • Ensure they are thoroughly sterilized to maintain freshness.
  8. Can the Hot Mustard:

    • Once the hot mustard reaches your desired thickness, remove it from the heat.
    • Carefully ladle the hot mustard into the prepared pint jars, leaving a small amount of headspace at the top.
    • Seal the jars according to proper canning procedures.
  9. Store or Share:

    • Allow the canned hot mustard to cool completely before storing.
    • Store the jars in a cool, dark place for long-term storage.
    • Enjoy on chicken, pork, hot dogs, sandwiches, or any dish that could use a flavorful kick!

This homemade hot mustard recipe is not only delicious but also versatile, adding a spicy zing to your favorite dishes. Perfect for gifting or keeping on hand for your own culinary creations, this condiment is sure to become a staple in your kitchen.
