Spicy Black Pepper Beef (Sapi Rawit Lada Hitam)

This Spicy Black Pepper Beef, also known as Sapi Rawit Lada Hitam, is a delightful and fiery Indonesian dish featuring tender strips of beef stir-fried with a blend of aromatic vegetables and a potent mix of chili peppers. Perfect for those who love a kick in their meals, this recipe brings together a balance of spice, savory flavors, and a touch of sweetness.

Ingredients:

  • 250 grams beef (sliced thinly into strips)
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 1 small shallot, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 carrot, sliced (or substitute with other vegetables of your choice)
  • 3 red chilies, sliced
  • 3 green chilies, sliced
  • 5 bird’s eye chilies, sliced (adjust according to your heat preference)
  • Saori black pepper sauce, to taste
  • Salt, to taste
  • Sugar, to taste
  • Soy sauce, to taste
  • Water, as needed

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Beef: Start by thoroughly washing the beef and slicing it thinly. For a more tender result, cut the beef into thin, elongated strips. Season the beef with a pinch of salt and let it rest for about 5 minutes. Rinse the beef again to remove excess salt and pat it dry with paper towels.

  2. Sauté Aromatics: Heat a splash of oil in a large pan or wok over medium heat. Add the diced onion, chopped shallot, and minced garlic. Sauté until the mixture is fragrant and the onions become translucent.

  3. Cook the Vegetables: Add the sliced red chilies, green chilies, and bird’s eye chilies to the pan. Stir-fry for a few minutes until the chilies release their aroma. Next, incorporate the sliced carrot (or your choice of vegetables). Continue to stir-fry until the carrots begin to soften and change color.

  4. Add the Beef: Increase the heat to high and add the beef to the pan. Stir-fry until the beef starts to brown and its color changes.

  5. Season the Dish: Season the mixture with salt, sugar, soy sauce, and Saori black pepper sauce. Pour in a small amount of water to help the flavors meld and ensure the beef is well-coated with the seasoning. Stir well.

  6. Simmer and Adjust: Cover the pan and let it simmer for a few minutes, allowing the flavors to blend and the beef to become tender. Check the seasoning and adjust to taste if necessary. If the sauce is too thick, add a bit more water.

  7. Serve: Once the beef is cooked to your liking and the flavors have melded, remove the pan from heat. Serve the Spicy Black Pepper Beef hot, and enjoy the vibrant flavors with a side of steamed rice or your favorite accompaniment.

This dish is sure to be a hit with those who enjoy a bit of heat in their meals. With its combination of spicy chilies, savory beef, and aromatic vegetables, it offers a satisfying and bold culinary experience.
