Ingredients:

Quantity Ingredient
2 cups Water
1 cup Milk
1 cup Flour
6 tsp Salt
1 tsp Salt (additional)
1 cup Butter
2 tsp Cumin seeds

Directions:

  1. Proof Yeast:

    • In a cup, mix 1/2 cup of water, yeast, and a teaspoon of flour.
    • Cover and let it sit until the mixture becomes bubbly and active (usually 5-10 minutes).
  2. Prepare Dough:

    • In a large bowl, combine the yeast/water mixture with milk and the remaining water.
    • Stir in 2 cups of flour until smooth, always stirring in the same direction.
    • Add salt, oil, and cumin seeds, stirring well.
    • Gradually add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until the dough becomes too stiff to stir.
  3. Knead Dough:

    • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured board.
    • Knead the dough until it becomes springy, adding only enough flour to prevent sticking to the board.
  4. Let Dough Rise:

    • Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, covered with plastic wrap, in a cool place.
    • Allow it to rise for a few hours until it doubles in size. The rising time can vary depending on the temperature; a warmer spot will result in a shorter rise.
  5. Preheat Oven:

    • Preheat the oven to 500ºF (260ºC).
    • If available, use unglazed quarry tiles in the oven to mimic tandoor ovens. Alternatively, use a baking sheet.
  6. Shape Naan:

    • Cut the dough into 12 equal pieces and form them into balls.
    • Lightly brush the top of each ball with melted butter or ghee.
    • Allow the balls to sit for about 20 minutes before shaping.
  7. Bake Naan:

    • Shape and bake the naan two at a time.
    • Flatten each ball with your fingers, then stretch it out into an oval shape.
    • Transfer the naan to the oven using a baking peel or lightly floured surface.
    • Bake for approximately 6 minutes, or until the naan becomes puffy and golden brown.
  8. Serve:

    • Once baked, the naan is ready to enjoy!
    • Serve it warm alongside your favorite curries or other Indian dishes.
