Oven Dried Hot Peppers – Flakes or Powder
🌶️🔥
Description: Make your own chili powder or flakes with those extra garden peppers, be it jalapenos, Thai, habanero, or pepper of your choice. Be sure to use gloves when handling hot peppers. Be careful when grinding not to get any of the pepper dust into your nose and eyes. As they dry in the oven, you’ll find yourself sneezing from them. I’ve dried them whole; you have to turn them, it takes a little longer. Then you have spots that are not dry. It seems the skin keeps the moisture in. The amount depends on how many you dry.
Ingredients:
- Parchment paper
Instructions:
Step | Instructions |
---|---|
1 | Cut the peppers in half or even quarters so the flesh is open and dries out faster and more evenly. |
2 | Place them on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper, ensuring they are in only one layer. |
3 | Preheat your oven to 200°F (93°C). |
4 | Arrange the peppers on the parchment-lined sheet and place them in the oven. |
5 | Keep an eye on them and remove those that are dry as needed so they don’t burn. |
6 | It can take anywhere from 1 to 3 hours for the peppers to fully dry. |
7 | Once the peppers are completely dry, remove them from the oven and let them cool. |
8 | You can crush them to make flakes or grind them to make chili powder. |
9 | Use a coffee grinder or food processor to grind them to your desired consistency. |
10 | Store the flakes or powder in a glass jar, away from sunlight, to maintain their freshness. |
Enjoy the intense flavor and heat of your homemade chili flakes or powder in your favorite dishes! 🌶️🔥
