Spicy Stuffed Tofu and Tempeh (Tahu Tempe Isi Mercon)

Ingredients:

  • 1 block of tempeh
  • 4 pieces of firm tofu, cut in half
  • All-purpose seasoned flour (any brand)
  • Clean water
  • For the filling:
    • 15 bird’s eye chilies (adjust according to your heat preference)
    • 2 cloves garlic
    • 2 shallots
    • Salt, to taste
  • Cooking oil

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Tofu and Tempeh:

    • Heat oil in a pan and fry the tofu until it is half cooked. Remove from the pan and drain on paper towels.
    • Cut the tempeh into pieces approximately 4 cm in size. Make a slit in the center of each piece, ensuring not to cut all the way through.
    • Do the same with the tofu, making a pocket in each piece.
  2. Make the Filling:

    • In the same pan, heat a small amount of oil. Sauté the shallots, garlic, and bird’s eye chilies until fragrant and softened.
    • Transfer the sautéed mixture to a mortar and pestle, and grind into a coarse paste. Add salt to taste.
  3. Stuff the Tofu and Tempeh:

    • Spoon the chili paste into the pockets of the tofu and tempeh pieces.
  4. Prepare the Batter:

    • In a bowl, mix the seasoned flour with water to create a batter. Ensure the batter is not too runny; it should have a thick consistency.
  5. Fry the Stuffed Tofu and Tempeh:

    • Heat enough oil in a pan for deep frying. Dip each stuffed tofu and tempeh piece into the batter, ensuring it is well coated.
    • Fry the coated tofu and tempeh in hot oil until golden brown and crispy. Remove from the oil and drain on paper towels.
  6. Serve:
