Ingredients:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup milk

Instructions:

  1. Combine dry ingredients: In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, cream of tartar, and salt.

  2. Cut in shortening: Add the shortening to the dry ingredients and cut it in until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  3. Add egg and milk: Crack the egg into the mixture, then pour in the milk. Mix until a dough forms a ball.

  4. Knead the dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it 10-12 times, being careful not to overwork it.

  5. Roll out the dough: Roll the dough out to about 3/4 inch thickness using a rolling pin.

  6. Cut the biscuits: Using a floured cutter, cut out the biscuits from the dough.

  7. Place on baking sheet: Place the cut biscuits onto a lightly greased baking sheet, making sure to leave some space between each one.

  8. Bake: Preheat your oven to 475 degrees Fahrenheit. Bake the biscuits for 12-15 minutes or until they are light golden brown on top.

  9. Serve: Once baked, remove the biscuits from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy these mile-high biscuits warm with butter, jam, or your favorite breakfast toppings!
