Description

An adapted recipe from Oso Grande Ranch, Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Decadent and a lovely special occasion breakfast/brunch.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
6 eggs
4 cups milk
1/2 cup dark brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 tablespoon Amaretto
1/2 cup butter
2 tablespoons margarine
3 tablespoons powdered sugar
1/4 cup maple syrup
Optional: sliced almonds for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare Bread: Place French bread slices in a 13×9 inch baking dish.

  2. Prepare Batter: In a mixing bowl, add eggs, milk, dark brown sugar, ground nutmeg, Amaretto, and whisk to combine until smooth.

  3. Soak Bread: Pour the egg mixture over the bread slices in the baking dish. Let it stand for 2 1/2 minutes, then turn the bread slices over and let them stand for an additional 2 1/2 minutes. For enhanced flavor, you may chill the prepared dish for up to 8 hours.

  4. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

  5. Melt Butter: In a 15×10 inch jelly roll pan, melt the butter in the preheated oven. Tilt the pan to coat evenly with melted butter.

  6. Bake French Toast: Place the soaked bread slices into the coated pan. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 15 minutes, then turn the slices over and bake for an additional 8 minutes or until golden brown.

  7. Garnish and Serve: Once baked, sprinkle the Amaretto French toast with sliced almonds and powdered sugar if desired. Serve warm with maple syrup.
