Servings: 12-14 Scones

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons white sugar
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon raw sugar

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Lightly grease a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper.

  2. Prepare Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, salt, white sugar, and baking powder.

  3. Incorporate Shortening: Using a pastry blender or fork, cut the shortening into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  4. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, and vanilla extract.

  5. Form Dough: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until a soft dough forms.

  6. Knead Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it lightly about 10 times until it comes together.

  7. Shape Scones: With lightly floured hands, pat the dough into a 1/2-inch thick circle.

  8. Cut Scones: Using a biscuit cutter, cut out rounds of dough. Gather any scraps and re-roll the dough to cut out more rounds until all the dough is used.

  9. Place on Baking Sheet: Arrange the scones on the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between them to expand while baking.

  10. Egg Wash: In a small bowl, mix the egg white with a small amount of warm water to create an egg wash. Brush the tops of the scones with the egg wash.

  11. Sprinkle Sugar: Sprinkle the tops of the scones with raw sugar for a delightful crunch.

  12. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown and have risen.

  13. Serve: Once baked, transfer the scones to a wire rack to cool slightly. Serve warm with your favorite jelly or preserves.

Note: Alternatively, you can cook the scones on an ungreased griddle at 275°F (135°C) for 10 minutes per side. If using this method, omit the raw sugar and egg wash.

Enjoy these homemade scones with your loved ones for a delightful treat any time of day!
