Description:

If you’re looking to diversify your grain intake, why not try making pulao, a seasoned rice dish, with bulgur? Bulgur is a nutritious grain made from parboiled and dried wheat kernels. This Bulgur Pulao recipe is not only flavorful but also incredibly versatile. Serve it alongside your favorite vegetables and a dollop of plain yogurt for a wholesome meal.

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup basmati rice
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 cup bulgur
  • 2 teaspoons cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • Water (3 cups for white rice, 3Β½ cups for presoaked brown rice)
  • Optional: Vegetables for added flavor and nutrition

Instructions:

Step Details
1. Check, rinse, and drain the basmati rice thoroughly.
2. Heat the oil in a 3-quart pot over medium heat.
3. Add the cumin seeds to the hot oil. Once they begin to change color, add the chopped onions.
4. Stir the onions until they turn translucent and aromatic.
5. Incorporate the bulgur into the pot and cook for a couple of minutes, allowing it to absorb the flavors.
6. Add the basmati rice, along with any optional vegetables, and sprinkle with salt. Stir continuously for about 5 minutes to toast the rice and vegetables slightly.
7. Pour in the appropriate amount of water based on the type of rice used (3 cups for white rice, 3Β½ cups for presoaked brown rice).
8. Once the water starts to boil, reduce the heat to low. Add the garam masala, cover the pot, and let the rice simmer until fully cooked. This typically takes 15 to 20 minutes for white rice and 40 to 50 minutes for brown rice.
9. Once the rice is cooked and fluffy, garnish with your choice of fresh herbs or nuts for added flavor and texture.
10. Serve the Bulgur Pulao hot alongside your favorite vegetable dishes and a generous serving of plain yogurt for a complete and satisfying meal.

Variation:

For a more complex flavor profile and added texture, consider incorporating some wild rice into the dish. Wild rice lends a chewy texture and a hint of smokiness, elevating the Bulgur Pulao to new culinary heights.
