🍳 Recipe: Classic Scotch Eggs 🏴

Description:

Experience the timeless delight of Scotch Eggs, a beloved Scottish specialty that brings together the richness of hard-boiled eggs, flavorful sausage meat, and a crispy breadcrumb coating. Reminiscent of my college days at Edinburgh University, these savory treats are perfect for any occasion, whether enjoyed with a pint of your favorite ale or as a hearty snack on the go.

  • Prep Time: 5 minutes

  • Total Time: 50 minutes
  • Servings: 2
  • Yield: 4 cackleberries (Scotch Eggs)

Ingredients:

  • 4 eggs
  • 1/2 lb sausage meat
  • 1 egg (for coating)
  • Seasoned flour
  • Breadcrumbs (for coating)

Instructions:

Step Description
1 Hard-boil the eggs: Place the eggs in a pan of cold water and gradually heat until it reaches a simmer. Be cautious not to let the water come to a rolling boil, as this can toughen the egg whites. Maintain this gentle simmer for 30 minutes.
2 Cool and peel the eggs: Once cooked, transfer the eggs to a bowl of cold water and allow them to cool completely. Peel off the shells when the eggs are sufficiently cooled.
3 Prepare the coating: Dip the hard-boiled eggs in seasoned flour, ensuring they are evenly coated.
4 Wrap in sausage meat: Take the sausage meat and cover each egg completely. Ensure the meat is evenly distributed around the egg.
5 Coat with egg and breadcrumbs: Dip each sausage-wrapped egg in beaten egg, then roll it in breadcrumbs, pressing gently to ensure the crumbs adhere to the surface.
6 Fry to golden perfection: Heat deep fat or oil to 375°F (190°C). Carefully place the coated eggs into the hot oil and fry until they turn a beautiful golden brown, ensuring the sausage meat is cooked through.
7 Drain and serve: Once cooked, remove the Scotch Eggs from the oil and drain them on a paper towel-lined plate to remove excess oil. Allow them to cool slightly before cutting each one in half. Serve your Scotch Eggs hot or cold, as desired.
