Description:

Jubilee Jumbles are a cherished family recipe passed down through generations, originating from an older version of the beloved Betty Crocker Cookbook. These soft, cake-like cookies are a staple at every family gathering, eagerly awaited and promptly devoured as soon as they hit the table. Recreating this recipe from my Aunt’s treasured cookbook ensures that the tradition lives on, providing a delightful treat for all to enjoy.

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup margarine
  • 2 – 4 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 – 4 tbsp hot water

Instructions:

  1. Mix thoroughly all ingredients except glaze: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, salt, baking soda, sour cream, shortening, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix until all ingredients are well incorporated and a smooth dough forms.

  2. Chill dough if necessary: If the dough is soft, cover the bowl and place it in the refrigerator to chill for about 15 minutes. Chilling the dough will make it easier to handle and shape.

  3. Preheat oven: While the dough is chilling, preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius). Prepare your baking sheets by lining them with parchment paper or lightly greasing them.

  4. Drop dough onto baking sheets: Using a level tablespoon, drop the chilled dough onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving about 2 inches of space between each cookie. The dough should be formed into rounded tablespoonfuls.

  5. Bake: Place the baking sheets in the preheated oven and bake the cookies for about 10 minutes, or until they are lightly golden brown around the edges. The cookies should be set but still soft to the touch.

  6. Cool: Once baked, remove the cookies from the oven and immediately transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. Allow the cookies to cool for at least 10 minutes before glazing.

  7. Prepare Browned Butter Glaze: In a small saucepan, heat the butter or margarine over low heat until it turns golden brown and develops a nutty aroma. Be careful not to burn the butter. Once browned, remove the saucepan from the heat.

  8. Make the glaze: Gradually blend in the confectioners’ sugar and vanilla extract, stirring until smooth. Add hot water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the glaze reaches your desired spreading consistency. The glaze should be thick but still pourable.

  9. Spread the glaze: Once the cookies have cooled, generously spread the Browned Butter Glaze over the tops of each cookie using a spoon or spatula. Allow the glaze to set before serving.

  10. Serve and enjoy: Arrange the glazed Jubilee Jumbles on a serving platter and watch as they disappear within moments. These delectable treats are perfect for sharing with family and friends on any occasion!

With their irresistible combination of soft, cake-like texture and rich, buttery flavor, Jubilee Jumbles are sure to become a new favorite in your household. Whether enjoyed as an indulgent dessert or a sweet snack, these cookies are guaranteed to bring joy to every bite.
