Ham And Cheese Kolache Recipe
Overview:
If kolaches were born in America, they might go by the name of puffs, but their roots trace back to Czechoslovakia, where they were first crafted as wedding pastries. Over time, they’ve become a beloved treat, especially evident during the annual Kolache Festivals in Texas. Traditionally sweet, we’re offering a savory twist with these Ham and Cheese Kolaches. They’re soft, Parmesan-laced rolls, baked to a golden hue, topped with hearty ham nestled in melted cheese and Dijon mustard—a flavorful meal in itself!

Ingredients:
Ingredient | Quantity |
---|---|
All-purpose flour | 3 – 3 1/2 cups |
Parmesan cheese | 1/4 cup |
Sugar | 1 cup |
Fast-rising yeast | 1 packet |
Salt | 1 teaspoon |
Water | 1 cup |
Butter | 2 tablespoons |
Margarine | 1 tablespoon |
Egg | 1 |
Ham | 1 cup diced |
Swiss cheese | 1/2 cup shredded |
Parmesan cheese | 1/4 cup grated |
Dijon mustard | 2 tablespoons |
Water (for egg glaze) | 1 tablespoon |
Instructions:
-
Ham and Cheese Filling:
- In a bowl, combine diced ham, shredded Swiss cheese, grated Parmesan cheese, and Dijon mustard. Stir well and refrigerate until ready to use.
-
Egg Glaze:
- In a small bowl, lightly beat egg white with 1 tablespoon water. Set aside.
-
Kolaches:
- In a large bowl, combine 1 cup flour, Parmesan cheese, sugar, yeast, and salt.
- Heat water and butter until very warm (120º to 130ºF). Gradually add to the flour mixture.
- Beat for 2 minutes at medium speed, scraping the bowl occasionally.
- Add egg and 1 cup flour; beat for 2 minutes at high speed.
- Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.
- Knead on a lightly floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 8 to 10 minutes. Cover and let rest for 10 minutes.
- Divide the dough into 16 equal pieces and shape each into a ball. Cover and let rest for 15 minutes.
- Place balls on greased baking sheets 2 inches apart. Make a deep and wide indentation on each ball, leaving a 1/2-inch ridge around the outside.
- Fill each indentation with the prepared Ham and Cheese filling.
- Cover and let rise in a warm, draft-free place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
- Brush the surface of the dough with the prepared Egg Glaze.
- Bake at 375ºF for 15 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Remove from sheets and serve warm. Refrigerate any leftovers.
Baking Tips:
- When using two baking sheets in the same oven, stagger them to ensure even baking. Heat rises, and stacking pans may cause uneven baking.
- Rotate the baking sheets halfway through baking, both top to bottom and front to back, for consistent results.
These Ham and Cheese Kolaches are perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a hearty snack any time of day. Enjoy the savory flavors and the comforting warmth straight from your oven! 🧀🍖🥖
