Ingredients:
Quantity | Ingredient |
---|---|
1 cup | Quick oats |
1/2 cup | Brown sugar |
1/2 cup | Whole wheat flour |
1 tsp | Salt |
2 tbsp | Margarine |
5 cups | White flour |
1 package | Dry yeast |
1 cup | Warm water |
1 pinch | Sugar |
Instructions:
-
Prepare Ingredients: Combine quick oats, brown sugar, whole wheat flour, salt, and margarine in a large mixing bowl.
-
Mix with Boiling Water: Pour 2 cups of boiling water over the mixture and stir until well combined.
-
Activate Yeast: Dissolve 1 package of dry yeast into 1/2 cup of warm water. (Adding a pinch of sugar here will help the yeast to start rising on its own.) When the oat mixture is cooled to lukewarm, add the activated yeast.
-
Incorporate Flour: Stir in 5 cups of white flour until a dough forms.
-
Knead the Dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5-10 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic.
-
First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp tea towel, and let it rise until doubled in size.
-
Second Rise: Once doubled, punch down the dough and let it rise again until doubled in size.
-
Shape the Loaves: Divide the dough into 2 equal portions and shape each into a loaf. Place them in greased 9x5x3″ loaf pans.
-
Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Bake the loaves for 30-40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown in color.
-
Cool and Serve: Remove the loaves from the oven and cool them on a wire rack. For a soft crust, brush the tops of the loaves with margarine.
