Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Cut circles out of bread slices with a 2-inch round cutter.

Melt 3 tablespoons of butter in a small saucepan.

Brush both sides of bread circles lightly with butter.

Bake bread circles on an ungreased baking sheet for 5 to 6 minutes per side until golden.

Remove to a wire rack and allow to cool completely.

Increase oven temperature to 425°F.

Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter in a small saucepan.

Stir in flour; cook and stir over medium heat until bubbly.

Whisk in milk; cook and stir for 1 minute or until the sauce thickens and bubbles (the sauce will be very thick). Remove from heat, and add mushrooms to the sauce, 3 tablespoons of cheese, salt, and black pepper, stirring until well blended.

Spread heaping tablespoon of mushroom mixture on top of each toast round; place on an ungreased baking sheet.
