Ingredients:

Quantity Ingredient
2 tsp Baking soda
1 tsp Ground cinnamon
1 tsp Ground cloves
1/2 tsp Ground nutmeg
1/2 tsp Salt
1/4 cup Butter
1/2 cup Light brown sugar
1 cup Unsweetened applesauce
1 Apple
1/2 cup Raisins

Instructions:

Making Applesauce:

  1. Wash, quarter, core and pare 3 medium-sized apples.
  2. Put prepared apples into a saucepan with 3 tablespoons of water.
  3. Cover and simmer for 10-15 minutes or until apples are tender, stirring occasionally.
  4. Press cooked apples through a sieve or food mill.
  5. Cool applesauce before using in cake.

Applesauce Cake:

  1. Preheat oven to 350ยฐF.
  2. Grease the bottom only of an 8x8x2-inch square baking pan.
  3. Sift together first 6 dry ingredients; set aside.
  4. Cream butter until softened.
  5. Gradually add sugar to butter, creaming until fluffy.
  6. Alternately add the dry ingredients (in fourths) and applesauce (in thirds) to creamed mixture, mixing until blended after each addition.
  7. Mix in the raisins.
  8. Turn batter into the prepared pan (batter will be very thick).
  9. Bake at 350ยฐF for 30 to 40 minutes, or until a cake tester or wooden toothpick comes out clean when inserted in the center.
  10. Cool in pan on a rack.
