Instructions
-
Sauté the Aromatics
Begin by heating the margarine in a skillet over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing them until fragrant and golden. -
Cook the Tuna Filling
Add the canned tuna to the skillet and stir to combine with the sautéed onions and garlic. Cook the mixture until the tuna is heated through and begins to brown slightly. -
Thicken the Filling
Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour over the tuna mixture, stirring quickly to combine and prevent lumps. Cook for about 1-2 minutes until the flour is fully incorporated. -
Add Milk and Seasonings
Slowly pour in the milk while continuing to stir. Keep stirring until the mixture becomes smooth and thickened. Season the filling with salt, pepper, and mushroom stock powder to taste. Taste and adjust the seasoning as necessary. -
Incorporate the Cheese
Stir in most of the grated cheddar cheese (reserve some for topping). Continue to stir until the cheese melts and the filling is creamy. Once the mixture starts bubbling, remove from heat and set aside to cool. -
Prepare the Pastry
Take one square of puff pastry and place 1 tablespoon of the cooled tuna filling in the center. Add a piece of hard-boiled egg on top of the filling. -
Fold the Pastry
Fold the pastry into a triangle shape by bringing one corner over to the opposite corner. Seal the edges by brushing a little egg white around the edges, then press them together. Use the tines of a fork to crimp the edges, creating a decorative pattern and ensuring a good seal. -
Egg Wash and Cheese Topping
Brush the surface of the pastry with the egg wash (the beaten egg mixed with milk). Sprinkle a little of the reserved grated cheddar cheese on top of each puff. -
Prepare the Baking Tray
Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or grease it lightly with margarine to prevent sticking. -
Bake the Tuna Puffs
Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F) for about 5 minutes. Place the prepared tuna puffs on the baking tray, making sure to leave space between each puff. Bake in the oven at 200°C with both top and bottom heat for about 20 minutes, or until the pastry turns golden and puffed. Adjust the temperature according to your oven if necessary. -
Serve
Remove the tuna puffs from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving. Enjoy these crispy, savory pastries as a snack or light meal!
These tuna puffs are the perfect combination of flaky pastry and a creamy, flavorful tuna filling, made even better with the richness of cheddar cheese and a touch of seasoning. The hard-boiled egg inside adds an extra layer of texture and taste, making this dish both filling and satisfying.
